Alpacas make popular attractions at petting zoos and some no doubt end up as pets. There is an intriguing third option that has emerged in recent years.

A good illustration of another use for alpacas can be found in the story of a female called Holli. Upon introduction, she might seem like a sorry case. Although she has the soft snowy fleece you would expect from an alpaca, her rear legs are crippled. On most alpaca farms her fate would most likely have been euthanasia, but she found a champion in Michelle Zumwalt of Missouri. Applying a range of treatments, which included acupuncture, water therapy and regular massaging, she eventually acquired a specifically adapted wheel chair for Holli. With new mobility, the young alpaca thrived and soon gained media attention.

Holli’s existence has evolved to include frequent visits to care homes where she meets with and delights wheel-chair bound humans. She is a favourite with the elderly, juvenile victims of abuse or persons with Alzheimer’s.  

Holli counts as just one of a growing number of alpacas trained to play a role in animal assisted therapy initiatives. While different animals such as horses, dogs and cats are used to help humans of all ages, alpacas are ideal. As they are friendly, docile enough to be led by halter and can be house trained, it is not difficult to take an alpaca into a building, if the patients in question cannot come out to meet it. Most therapy alpacas are not as disabled as Holli.

An alpaca farm that runs a programme for children of about ten years old is the Paca Peace Ranch in Colorado. Founded by Bob and Sue Hill, the kids train their own alpaca under the supervision of a mentor. Participation is one-on-one and the programme does not cost anything. Funds are raised through grants and donations from the public. The initiative succeeds in teaching children how to take responsibility for their animals and their goals in life.

A number of other animal assisted therapy groups use alpacas to aid children with autism or other special needs to come to terms with their world.

A closer look at the other roles alpacas could play in our society will ultimately pave the way towards a new breed of alpaca farms.

In the United States, alpaca farms were considered a rarity a mere three decades ago. These days, there are over 100,000 alpacas to be found on 4000 farms located in all fifty states.

The first commercial alpacas arrived in the States around 1984, and until 1998, regular imports strengthened the genetic diversity of the North American alpaca stock. Following a detailed process of record keeping, the Alpaca Registry now holds custody over knowledge of a vast array of branches of the United States alpaca family tree. The whole system doubles as a security measure. With each alpaca genetically coded, it would be impossible for an alpaca thief to get rid of his spoils since each animal’s ownership can easily be traced.

The camelids date back to ten million years ago and count camels and llamas among their numbers, but the passage to South America, by the guanaco and the vicuna happened more recently, namely about two and a half million years ago. alpacas developed out of the domestication and breeding of vicunas. As far as size, fleece and dental structure goes, a connection between the two is obvious.

The Spanish conquest of South America led to the devastation of its way of life. In pursuit of rumoured treasures of gold, they ignored the alpaca farms that formed a cornerstone of the Peruvian economy of the time. Traditions dating back more than 5000 years were all but ruined. Records suggest that only ten per cent of the alpaca herd of the time survived the Spanish colonists. Some alpaca stock was kept safe, and these days, the alpacas are once more valued for their fiber.

Today the Andes Mountains are home to approximately three and a half million alpacas. The great majority of the South American herd is white, since that is the color that the clothing manufacturers demand.

The first alpaca yarn reached British shores in 1808, but did not make that much of an impact. An experiment in Halifax likewise failed to yield results. A more productive enterprise was that of Titus Salt, who received a load of alpaca wool around 1836. With some experimental strategies, he was able to pioneer a weaving method that worked for the creation of alpaca cloth. Bradford, where he was situated, is still influential in the alpaca world and his success led to the first ill-fated attempts to settle alpacas in Britain and Europe.

Alpaca farms now exist across the globe, in places as diverse as Australia, New Zeeland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
